The thyroid gland is located in the lower front of the neck and is responsible for regulating energy, body temperature, and organ function by secreting the thyroid hormone. When nodules grow on the thyroid gland, they can restrict its ability to create healthy hormone levels as well as cause pain, hoarseness, and shortness of breath. If you have developed a condition involving the thyroid, you may need to see Dr. Tomas Birriel for thyroid surgery in Morgan City, Louisiana.
Thyroid surgery is generally recommended for patients who have:
- Cancerous thyroid nodules
- Benign thyroid nodules large enough to cause discomfort
- Overactive thyroid glands
- Large thyroid glands, also known as goiters
You should not have anything to eat or drink after midnight the night before surgery. The procedure typically lasts 2 to 2 ½ hours, and will be performed under anesthetic. Dr. Tomas Birriel will determine how much of the thyroid gland needs to be removed based on your specific condition. Our surgeon will make a small incision to remove the nodules, and may utilize a surgical drain.
Following treatment, your throat may feel sore from the surgical drain, and you should restrict physical activity to reduce the risk of a blood clot or disrupting the sutures. After proper healing, you should be able to resume all normal activities.
Please do not hesitate to contact our general surgeon and team at 985-384-7173 if you have any further questions or need to schedule an appointment.
